Expanding Mental Health Care In Oregon

OPB | May 31, 2013 12:30 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 12:54 a.m.

In the months since the December 2012 massacre of 26 children at Sandy Hook, we’ve done shows about mental health and how to prevent these kinds of tragedies. Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney says he’s been working since that time on a bi-partisan bill to expand the state’s capacity to meet the mental health needs of Oregonians.

State Senator Elizabeth Steiner Hayward recently came out publicly as someone who suffers from clinical depression. We’ll talk with her about her personal struggles with mental health and what she sees as the bill‘s potential.

Have you or someone you love been affected by mental illness? What do you want the state to do to improve its assitance for people suffering from mental illness?
