Exploring Food Deserts In East Portland

Last week, OPB’s Amanda Peacher told a story about the lack of access to healthy food options in outer East Portland. It was the first of a three-part series entitled East of 82nd examining Portland’s fastest growing neighborhood and the challenges it faces (You can look here to see your neighborhood’s proximity to healthy food options).

We’ll talk to an East Portland resident about the challenges of living far from healthy food choices, and we’ll speak to activists who are trying to change the current situation.

You can see the rest of OPB’s East of 82nd series here, which includes a tumblr page and the story of a Somali refeugee who started his own market in Portland.

Do you live in a food desert? How difficult is it to get fresh produce? What kind of changes would you like to see in your community?
