Gun Stories: Suicide

Marjorie Hundtoft‘s brother was 31 years old when he bought a gun and bullets, drove to Seaside, got a hotel room, and shot himself in the head.

When the topic of guns or gun control comes up, many people picture the devastating images from Newtown or Clackamas Town Center, but how often do you imagine a man, alone, in a hotel room?

In Oregon, 83 percent of firearm fatalities are due to suicide.

This week OPB News and Think Out Loud are bringing you a special series, Gun Stories, that focuses on gun culture in Oregon. Think Out Loud begins the week with an exploration of one aspect of gun use in particular: suicide.

How does suicide figure into the national discussion about guns and gun control?

Do you know someone who has killed themselves (or tried to) using a gun? How did they access it? What happened? What do you think could have saved his or her life?

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK, that’s 1-800-273-8255.
