Lawmakers Hash Out Final Budget Deal

OPB | June 27, 2013 12:20 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 1:01 a.m.

As the deadline for the end of the legislative session looms, lawmakers are hashing out the final details of the state budget. The Senate passed two important bills Wednesday, which could indicate the end is near. One bill would renew a tax on hospitals and long-term care providers. The other dedicates $6.55 billion to the K-12 budget.

The Governor, Senate, and House of Representatives are all trying to reach a “grand bargain” on changes to public employee pensions and tax increases. Some changes have already been made to the PERS system, but Republicans would like to see further cuts, and Democrats are hoping for more revenue.

We’ll check in with House leadership on both sides of the aisle to see what they still want to accomplish before going home.

What bills are you watching? What do hope legislators accomplish before the end of the session?
