The next stop in the Our Town series is the newly formed neighborhood of Rosewood which straddles Portland and Gresham. About 70 to 80 percent of the people here live in apartments. Jenny Glass, who runs the Rosewood Initiative, says the impetus for the initiative came from law enforcement as a way to address high rates of drug and property crime. But the effort quickly gained momentum as residents began to see it as a way to improve their neighborhood and create a stronger sense of community.
Glass says holiday parties with Santa, hip hop nights for youth, and a Revitalization series, are some examples of their success to date. At the same time, volunteers are turning an old billiard hall in the heart of Rosewood into a new community center.
One of the big successes: the creation of a community mural last summer on the back of a gas station buildng that was frequently vandalized.
Do you live in Rosewood? What changes have you seen in the neighborhood recently? What should we know about Rosewood?
We’ve put together a companion website for the Our Town series. Head over there to check out our interactive map which includes interviews and photographs of the people and places of Rosewood.
