Portland Mayor Sam Adams now says he previously lied about his relationship with Beau Breedlove. Breedlove was a 17 year old legislative intern when he and Adams met in 2005. In 2007, a potential political rival raised questions about whether their relationship was sexual. Adams said at that time the questions were a smear campaign, and that he was like a mentor to the much younger man.
But Monday, facing a Willamette Week report that he lied, Adams admitted he’d not told the full story. He held a news conference Tuesday to explain and apologize. The mayor maintains that Breedlove was 18 before their relationship became sexual. He is now facing calls for independent investigations, for him to resign and a recall effort.
The story raises plenty of questions - of trust in political leaders, of appropriate sexual relationships, of the extent of the mayor’s attempt to keep the truth from getting out, of journalistic approaches to stories like these. And, of course, of what’s next for Sam Adams and Portland. Questions are reverberating beyond city and state borders.
What did you think when you learned that the mayor had a sexual relationship with a teenager? What did you think when you learned he lied about it? What questions do you think this story raises?
