Sheriff Changes Detention Policy

OPB | April 4, 2013 12:06 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 12:40 a.m.

Oregon jails are approaching maximum capacity, and certain counties have already reached their limits. Part of the problem, as Multnomah County Sheriff Daniel Staton sees it, is that jails are advised by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hold undocumented immigrants for deportation, regardless of their alleged crime. Sheriff Staton plans to change the hold policy for Multnomah County. He says he won’t hold undocumented immigrants for deportation when they are jailed for low-level or nonviolent crimes.

How will this new immigration policy affect you?
