Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Same-Sex Marriage

OPB | March 27, 2013 12:06 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 12:39 a.m.

For the first time in history, the Supreme Court will take on the same-sex marriage debate. This week was the beginning of oral arguments for two controversial cases: Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California in 2008, and the Defense of Marriage act (DOMA), a federal law that in 1996 defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman. This week the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for each case.

We’ll check in with U.S. Supreme Court scholar Lisa McElroy about what has happened in the courtroom so far. We’ll also hear from Anna Adams, spokesperson from Protect Marriage Oregon, and from Linda Campbell, a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel whose wife, Nancy, will be the first same-sex spouse to be buried in a national cemetery.

What do you want to know about these cases? How do these laws impact your life?
