Last Saturday, the Portland Thorns gave the City of Roses its first championship win since 1977, when the Trail Blazers won the NBA Finals. It was the inaugural season for the new National Women’s Soccer League, which has eight teams, and Portland seems to have embraced the Thorns as fervently as they have their male equivalent. Like the Timbers, the women’s team has its own supporters club. There was a little controversy before the season officially started over some “Get Thorny” T-shirts that were quickly discontinued. But it doesn’t seem to have hurt the team in the long run.
This is the third attempt to create a women’s soccer league. Attendance has been an issue in the past, but Portland — aka Soccer City USA — had consistent crowds that blew the other seven NWSL cities out of the water.
Are you a Portland Thorns fan? What are your favorite highlights from the team’s first season?
- Rachel Buehler: Central defender for the Portland Thorns and the US women’s national team
- Angie Kerr: Midfielder for the Portland Thorns
