A divided U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that police may collect a DNA sample upon a suspect’s arrest. Justice Samuel Alito — who joined the majority — said it was the “most important criminal procedure case this court has heard in decades.” Oregon is in the minority of states that currently does not allow police to collect DNA from people who are suspected — not convicted — of a crime.
