On November 6th voters in Washington State approved Referendum 74, which legalized same sex marriage. This Thursday, December 6th, the law will go into effect, and County Clerk’s offices around the state will begin granting marriage licenses to same sex couples. After a standard three day waiting period, marriage ceremonies will be able to commence.
Clerk’s offices throughout Washington are extending their hours of operation as they anticipate a flood of applicants for marriage licenses. Some counties have already determined who will be the first few couples to get licenses.
Clerk’s offices are not the only places that are expecting an uptick in traffic. Wedding planners, venues, bakers, florists and others in the industry are anticipating more business as the pool of people marrying gets larger. Based on a study by The Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, The Columbian has estimated a $4.7 million dollar boon due to wedding and tourism related activities in Clark County alone.
Think Out Loud will be at Clark County Auditor’s Marriage Licensing Department to check in with some of the couples applying for marriage licenses.
Will you be in Washington on Thursday to get a marriage license?
