1:30 pm Special with Timothy Geithner
If you have questions about the state of the economy, this is the show for answers. Timothy Geithner, the Secretary of the Treasury, will be in Portland for a special event with the Portland City Club where Dave Miller will interview him. We'll broadcast their conversation live from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m. and then re-air it the next day on Think Out Loud where we'll also have reactions from local experts.
Timothy Geithner is the 75th Secretary of the Treasury. He has served under President Obama since the beginning of the Obama Administration in 2009 and is the last remaining member of Obama's original economic team. Obama has reportedly worked hard to prevent Geithner from stepping down though Geithner is now saying he won't continue on if the president is re-elected. According to the New York Times, Geithner and the president:
...are not friends exactly — Mr. Geithner rolls his eyes at the idea of playing golf, the president’s preferred form of relaxation — but they are what David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s political adviser, calls “kindred spirits.”
Aides say that nearly as important to the president as Mr. Geithner’s expertise in battling financial crises has been his style in doing so. He was cool in a crisis, and while he was just as confident as the other members of the administration’s first team of economic advisers, with its big egos, he was the self-effacing one who could break the tension with a little sarcasm, a lot of profanity and his high-pitched giggle.
Geithner and his economic team have been criticized for under-estimating the depth of the economic crisis — and having too much faith in the stimulus package to turn the economy around. The Treasury Department argues that the economy is stronger now because of the reforms it put into place.
Timothy Geithner is doing a bit of a tour now, talking about the economy and the policies of the Obama Administration.
While we won't be taking calls during this special program, we do want to get answers to your questions — so please, post them here. What do you want to ask Timothy Geithner? (Please note that we will take calls during our reaction show on Thursday.)
