Al Letson Visits Peninsula School
Al Letson wears a lot of hats. He's a poet, playwright, host of the public radio show State of the Re:Union. This week, he's a teaching artist at Peninsula School in North Portland. Through Caldera's visiting artists program, Letson is working with sixth and seventh graders to help them tell stories about their families. Letson is encouraging students to bring in pictures of themselves and their relatives. He's leading them in writing exercises to draw out the stories behind the photographs.
Eventually, this work will become a part of the Portland Art Museum's Object Stories project and some of the photos and stories will appear alongside an exhibit featuring photographer Carrie Mae Weems, who is a Portland native.
What questions do you have for Al Letson? Have you ever participated in a project like this? What stories do your family photos evoke?
