A number of studies have come out recently about autism including a look at the genetic origins and links to obesity, smoking and other factors.

A paper published in the journal Pediatrics last month says babies whose mothers who are obese or suffer from hypertension or diabetes during pregnancy have an increased likelihood of being born with autism spectrum disorder or developmental delays. The study was conducted in California and included children born between 2003 and 2010.

New research also published in April suggests that multiple gene mutations could be linked to autism. Three separate studies looked at possible genetic connections to autism, but none were conclusive.

In this show we'll explore what some of the new research says.

Have you been diagnosed with autism? Has someone in your family? Does it help you to understand the possible causes of the condition?
