Today we present you with a special rebroadcast of The Benefits of Auctioneering show. Spring is high season for charity fundraising events, including benefit auctions. We meet Kelly Russell, a young auctioneer in the Portland area who describes her job as being a broker of transactions between those who can give and those in need. This program originally aired December 9, 2010.

If you donate money, what do you know about the people your gift supports. If you've received support from a charity, do you feel connected to the people who gave?

I donate to piblic broadcasting but now I am having second  thoughts in light  of the  scandal regarding  NPR.  I  don't  think I will  donate  again until  OPB shows  it  is  not  just  a pro  liberal  organization.  Also,  I will  encourange  my  elected  representatives  to  defund  public  broadcasting.  This  is  a  very  saddening  turn  of  events >> I would  never  have  thought  that  public  broadcasting  could  be  anything  but  completely  nuetral  and  unbiased.   I  TRUELY  AM  SHOCKED  BY  THE  LIBERAL  LEANINGS  OF  PUBLIC  BROADCASTING  >.I  GUESS  ONE  SHOULD  THINK MORE  CRITICALLY  ABOUT  THE  SOURCE  OF  ONE'S  INFORMATION.

how much did you donate? what proof can you offer to make us believe this statement? Why are you here and not following Rush or Beck or some other who more closely seems to resemble your mental... um...state

stick your fingers in a wall socket if you want to know what a real shock would be, then let us know if that resembles your truly shocking recent experience

you really don't know what you are talking about, AGAIN

look up shill, then you'll know what you most resemble

if one has never had a first thought, how does a second one come about?

shocked indeed - and critical thinking you mention in passing? have you ever known a moment of it?

let us know - we're all on edge, now

are you thinking of auctioning off your critical thinking skills - that is today's topic, is it not?

i can't stop laughing at you

All industry are impacted to a greater or lesser extent by TECHNOLOGY.   And one of the great internet success stories and early killer app of  eCommerce  is based on Auction Bidding:  eBay.

You can be anywhere on the planet, on top of the K2,  or even in bed without makeup and you can bid  and win  a '57 Chevy in mint condition.

Many institutions are challenged by the Internet:  Card Catalogues vs Google,   Newspapers vs OnLine Media,  Movie Rental Stores vs Netflix/Hulu.com,  Film photography vs Digital Cameras and cloud based archiving, Wikipedia vs Britannica.

How does a live fast talking auctioneer  survive  against eBay and the internet epoch?    The dinosaurs again roam the earth, but in our gas tanks.   Even Christies and Southebys  have their own web based bidding.  And the young are voting with their dollars, and it isn't for the jive.

factoid wrapped in fantasy packaged as drivel- and then asked as a question - this is a presence?

Writing a check at your kitchen table is just fine.  Attending an auction builds a community and relationships are what sustains a non-profit.   It also allows those who want to help support the organization do so without writing the check.  Everyone's role is important.

Scott thanks for the information.  Timely and useful.

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. Do you agree? OPB Air Jordan
