Changes Proposed to the Selective Service
Congressman Peter DeFazio has proposed eliminating the Selective Service. Young men are required to register with the department or face possible criminal charges. Although no one has been prosecuted since the mid-80s, most young men do choose to register. Since the combat exclusion rule has been lifted for women, there's speculation that women will soon be required to register.
Do you think the Selective Service should require women to register, now that the military has lifted the its combat exclusion policy? Should the Service be eliminated altogether? What purpose does the possibility of a draft serve?
GUESTS:
- Dick Flahavan: Associate director of the Selective Service
- Josh Volk: Farmer; conscientious objector who chose not to register
- Rachel Natelson: Legal director for the Service Women's Action Network
