The group advocating for an anti-gillnetting ballot measure has chosen to end* their campaign in favor of a new policy promoted by Governor Kitzhaber. The ballot measure would ban the use of large nets designed to catch fish by the gills in commercial, nontribal fishing on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Measure 81 remains on the ballot, but its sponsors — a coalition of environmental groups and sports fishermen — are instead throwing support behind the governor's plan. That plan would restrict gillnetting to side channels of the Columbia River. Commercial fishermen, who were against the ballot measure, say they still have concerns about how the new plan would affect their livelihood.

Do you fish on the Columbia River? How would a gillnet ban affect you?
