The University of Portland was ranked one of the best colleges in the country for promoting community service among its students.

Kurt Berning, a senior at the University of Portland, just returned from a three month trip to Kenya where he worked as a teacher. He went there with help from the University of Portland Service and Justice Center Moreau Center for Service and Leadership. He also raised some of the funds himself. While he was in Kenya, he taught large groups of students and helped to bring electricity to their classrooms. Since he had no prior teaching experience, Berning was supposed to be assisting a more experienced teacher, but that person was not available to teach due to a medical issue. That left Berning to teach many of the classes on his own. When asked what he'll take away from this experience, he said, "I learned way more than I taught."

Have you volunteered abroad? Why did you get involved in community service?
