Oregon public univeristy students are paying an average of 7.5 percent more tuition than they were a year ago. Tuition for the 2012-13 school year has not yet been set, but if past years are any indication, it will likely go up again — in part because state appropriations for public universities like UO have been decreasing in recent years. And college costs have risen to such a degree that student loan debt has now surpassed credit card debt for Americans.

So what can be done to make college more affordable? Some say universities need to cut their spending practices. Others point out the financial aid application and process needs to be streamlined. Students in Oregon have been calling for reforms, including legislation to bring the cost of textbooks down — an expense that can cost upwards of $1000 a year.

Are you a student in college or the parent of one? How are you dealing with the rising cost of tuition? Who do you see as the culprit for the rising cost of college?
