Last week, Andrew Becker, Steven Coatsworth, and Celine Swenson-Harris were on a mission. They drove a 1989 Honda Civic — painted like an American flag — from Eugene to Charlotte, North Carolina for the Democratic National Convention. Along the way, they interviewed people they met and posted their cross-country musings.

Andrew and Steven are in their mid-20s. Their undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon have been interrupted a few times over the years by stints in political campaigns. Celine just turned 18, and will start at the U of O later this month. The trio are just the kind of young voters that the Obama campaign attracted in mighty numbers four years ago, and hopes to attract again.

Not that the Obama campaign has any convincing to do with these three. They're fierce defenders of the president, and hopeful for what a second term would bring.

On the second day of the convention, we'll talk to Celine, Andrew, and Steven about what makes them Democrats — and what they see as the future of the party.

We'll also sit down with Rep. Suzanne Bonamici to ask her how her first term as congresswoman for Oregon's first district is going.

Here are some of our photos from the first day of the DNC:
