Devin Phillips didn't originally choose to be a jazz musician in Portland. Originally from New Orleans, he was recruited here by the Portland Jazz Festival after Hurricane Katrina devastated his city.
He did, however, choose to stay. He now teaches jazz programs at local schools and travels to countries in Africa for musical exchanges.
Phillips says Portland may not be the jazz Mecca that he left behind, but the city's livability and community of enthusiastic arts supporters have been well-kept secrets — which he feels fortunate to have discovered.
Devin Phillips performs at Portland's Soul'd Out Music Festival with legendary drummer Louis Hayes on April 11 at Jimmy Mak's and with fellow sax player and New Orleanian Ellis Marsalis on April 16 at the Aladdin Theater.
What questions do you have for Devin Phillips? Are you a performer? What's your experience with the Northwest's jazz scene?
