In response to the shootings at Clackamas Town Center and Sandy Hook Elementary, we're looking into some of the potential ways to prevent such tragedies. We've discussed security in schools and what resources parents need when their children struggle with behavioral or emotional problems. On this show, we'll discuss guns, gun safety and the laws that govern who can own a firearm.
Shortly after the lastest shooting, President Obama said he would consider requiring background checks for all gun owners and asked Vice President Joe Biden to spearhead an effort to come up with more gun control proposals. The National Rifle Association (NRA) pushed back in a press conference a week after the shooting at Sandy Hook. NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre called for armed security in schools saying, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
In Oregon, state Senator Ginny Burdick vowed to reintroduce legislation in the upcoming 2013 session to ban high capacity gun magazines. Local gun lobbyists argued the ban would not be effective. Some pointed out that Connecticut's strict gun laws didn't prevent the tragedy there.
Do you own a gun? Did you grow up in a home where guns were kept? What personal experiences in your life have shaped your views on guns and gun laws?
