Does The Oregon Constitution Need An Equal Rights Amendment?
Representative Julie Parrish (R-West Linn) says she was surprised to find out that women's rights are not explicitly spelled out in the Oregon constitution. She's one of many lawmakers sponsoring legislation that would put the issue before voters.
The federal version of the Equal Rights Amendment passed both the U.S. House and Senate in 1972, but it failed to get ratification from the requisite 38 states in order to become the 27th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Some lawmakers oppose the idea of a state-level equal rights amendment, not because they are against women's equality, but because they say it could water down protections for other groups.
