Lidia Yuknavitch describes her new debut novel, Dora: A Headcase, as a "dark farce." She says the book was inspired by one of Freud's famous cases. But she says readers certainly don't need to be familiar with the father of psychoanalysis to enjoy the book.
Yuknavitch says the character of a troubled girl that drives the book reflects some of the author's own experiences growing up. But she says she draws heavily on the experiences of the youth she's worked with over the years. Yuknavitch has spent decades teaching at Mt. Hood Community College. She's also taught writing in places like youth detention facilities and drug recovery programs.
She says she certainly hopes young people pick up the book, but it's not a Young Adult novel per se. Yuknavitch says no matter who reads it, she hopes it's useful in addition to entertaining.
