Yesterday the U.S. Senate rejected a bill that would increase background checks for gun sales. It required 60 votes to pass, but ended up with only 54. It's been described as a "stinging blow" to President Obama.
Meanwhile in the Oregon Legislature, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed four gun control bills — including one that requires criminal background checks for guns transferred between private individuals. The background check bill allows exceptions for certain family members

4/19/13 Editor's Note: The issue of whether someone could take away the gun of a potentially suicidal friend or family member came up on the show. Under the language of the amended bill, that would still be legal. The background checks would only be required for the "sale, gift or lease of a firearm."
