The troubled pre-treatment facility at Hanford’s waste treatment plant is under construction.

Tanks holding radioactive waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation have been leaking slowly for years. Some of that waste has already seeped into the nearby Columbia River. Now, federal budget cuts due to sequestration are slowing down the already troubled cleanup process even further. And environmental groups have been critical of a recent plan to ship some of the waste from Hanford to New Mexico.
