After 34 years, Hasso Hering is stepping down from his position as the editor of the Albany Democrat-Herald. His last day was September 14. Hering says he didn't want to leave, and his departure is part of an initiative to help save money for the newspaper. Mike McInally, the general manager of Mid-Valley Media and editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, will take over as the primary editor for the Democrat-Herald. Hering says he is taking a deep breath and trying to figure out his next step.
Hering was instrumental in helping the newspaper jump into the world of multimedia with his D-H Today videos. He says this isn't the end of the line, and he's eager to contribute to the news world as long as he can.
We'll talk with Hering about his time in the newspaper business and where he sees the industry going.
