How Will Washington's Pot Law Be Implemented?
Last week Washingtonians voted for a citizen's initiative that will legalize possession of pot. Some county prosecutors immediately dropped all possession charges, but other effects will take longer to materialize.
The law will give power to the state Liquor Control Board to license, tax, and regulate marijuana producers, processors, and retailers. Over the next year, the board will meet with the state departments of health and agriculture to figure out how to implement the law. The law could result in two billion dollars in tax revenue over the next five years.
The law has one big hurdle to overcome. Federal law still classifies marijuana as an Schedule I controlled substance. Governor Chris Gregoire will meet with the U.S. Justice Department Tuesday to discuss how federal law enforcement will respond to the law.
What does Washington's new recreational pot law mean for you? What questions do you have about the law and how it will be implemented?
