John Hockenberry is a household name to many public radio listeners mostly because of his time behind the microphone as host of The Takeaway. But in the Northwest some people know him for his early years at the University of Oregon. He was there in the 80's, studying harpsichord and piano, and beginning his broadcasting career at KLCC in Eugene.
Since then he's travelled the world hosting and reporting for radio and television He's written for newspapers and magazines. He's won four Emmys and four Peabodys. He's authored two books. And he's become a prominent figure in the disability rights movement.
At age 19 Hockenberry was hitch-hiking when the driver of the car fell asleep and crashed. Hockenberry suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. In this TED Talk he tells his story:
