Looking at Community Newspapers
With all the stories you hear about the financial struggles of daily newspapers, it may seem odd to hear about two towns that are home to not one but two community papers. In fact, there's something of a newspaper war brewing in Hillsboro and Forest Grove.
In Hillsboro, the long-time weekly, The Hillsboro Argus, published by The Oregonian, got some competition when the Pamplin Media Group began to publish The Hillsboro Tribune there. In Forest Grove, the Pamplin Forest Grove News Times paper now has to contend with new competition from the Oregonian's Forest Grove Leader. Both The Oregonian and Pamplin have significant local news presences in communities around the Portland metro area.
We'll ask how Hillsboro and Forest Grove are being served by the papers and if they're big enough to support two similar publications.
Do you live in Hillsboro or Forest Grove? Which of the two papers in your town do you read? Does it matter who publishes your community newspaper?
GUESTS:
- John Schrag: Publisher of The Forest Grove News Times and The Hillsboro Tribune
- Jock Lauterer: Senior lecturer at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Editor's Note: The Oregonian's Chris Anderson declined our invitation to participate
