P. 541: "Aye, he's chasing me now; not I, him - that's bad..."

Matt Kish has a disarmingly simple first two sentences in the forward to his new book:

Really, I just wanted to make a version of Moby-Dick that looks like I see it. That's all.

But the only simple thing about Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page is the concept, not the final product. Every day, for 552 days in a row, he made a drawing based on a page of Moby-Dick. Starting with the iconic "Call me Ishmael" and going all the way to the chilling "another orphan" a year and a half later, this is an idiosyncratic visual companion to one of the biggest, weirdest, most wonderful novels ever written.

Kish made art with whatever he had on hand. He drew on notebook paper, sketchpads, and countless pages torn from old textbooks and scientific reference works. He drew with ballpoint pens and nail polish, acrylic paint and colored pencils.

Kish will join us to talk about why be embarked on this crazy and beautiful project, and also about the pleasures and pitfalls he encountered.
