Northwest Passages: Ursula K. Le Guin
Oregon icon Ursula K. Le Guin writes science fiction, fantasy, poetry, and children's books. She has won multiple honors for dozens of works, starting with her early novel A Wizard of Earthsea, and including the Library of Congress' Living Legends award and several honors for lifetime achievement.
The Oregonian recently called her the "Queen Mother of Science Fiction." I asked her if she was, and she laughed.
You should hear what my family did with that. Don't ever let anyone call you Queen Mother.
Le Guin is 80 years old now, and besides writing (and providing pithy quotes), she's taken a high profile stand against Google's controversial effort to digitize books. She joins us to talk about Google, writing, Sparrowhawk, Lavinia, and more.
You are invited to be part live audience for this program. It's free and open to the public. Doors open at 8 AM and the show starts at 9 AM sharp. If you can't make it in person, post your questions here!
Please note: This live show is happening at OPB's Portland studios, 7140 SW Macadam Avenue. Parking at OPB is tight. If you drive, you may wish to plan to park offsite. There is paid parking at Willamette Park. Street parking is available on the west side of Macadam. There is a bike rack on the lower level of OPB's parking lot. Tri-Met bus #35 stops in front of OPB.

Let's wish Le Guin another 80 years of creative life!!!

Can I also just add that this is such a great photo of her. The smile speaks so much of what she has done for her craft over the years. Well done to whoever took it. I attend a memphis private school where I am studying photography. As an author she is obviously one of the best in the business and I personally love settling down in front of a warm fire while cracking open on of her classics.
-
So as I read more on this the idea behind living room sofas and the process of leather sofa beds and see your point. Just to be sure look at coffee tables. Le Guin is a creative writer and one to be respected. Her relation to the topic at hand goes beyond wisdom of her age.

I'm a teacher, and my seventh grade English class has been reading A Wizard of Earthsea for the past three weeks. We're wrapping up today in class.
What do you hope young people take from the novel? What was the inspiration for it? Did you have someone in mind when you created Ged's character?
Thanks for writing the novel. I've enjoyed teaching it for two years now, and the students have been thrilled to read it. It's not like anything else we read, so quite a few students really appreciate it.

Back in the '80's, I watched the PBS version of the televised "The Lathe of Heaven." Way before 9-11 and the aftermath, the tale talked about the reality shifting nature of George Orr's "talent." The story had a big impact on me, and showed me how our views of reality is ever shifting, and we may be utterly clueless that what we view as "reality" may be created by others. And how controlling "reality" may lead to madness and unintended consequences.
My question would be how did Ms. Le Guin come up with this story?
-
I'm with you. It's a very detailed story by Ms. LeGuin. You have to wonder if she's crazy or not. It could definitely be a reality created by others that she's just living in. Very weird if you think about it. Also, purity rings for girls are also pretty weird if you think about it.

One of the first science fiction books I ever read was 'A Wrinkle in Time.' I've actually re-read it several times over the years (now being 58 years young), and each time have taken something new from it. I am eternally grateful that it exposed me to the genre, and authors such as Ms. Le Guin, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Andre' Norton, Arthur Clarke and others, too numerous to count.
I very much doubt that I will ever buy a Kindle or other 'e-reader;' Books are irreplaceable!
-
Long live Ursula's beautiful texts of science fiction! I agree with the above comment about e-books. The worst things about e-books, is that you can not share them, pass them to a friend, or re-sell them when you are done! And they often cost as much or more than a physical book. Whaaaat?

Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail right on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Your observation is right on spot,it needs everyone to analyse themselves to succeed and develop enough potential to face any obstacles or odd times.

I discovered Ursula first in the Wizard of Earthsea series as an adult just a decade and a half ago, and she became my favorite, up there with Azimov, MacAffrey and Zelzany.
I wonder how she felt about the tv show on Wizard of EarthSea a few years ago, which i felt was a shadow of her work. How did she feel about it, and are there any indications that the three books would be made into a motion picture series, ala Lord of the Rings? It's worthy of such treatment.
-
Do you know if any utopian communities have been set up along the lines of any of your novels?
-
I have always been a die-hard fan of Ursula.
-
I saw Lathe of Heaven on PBS way back when also. I had read the book earlier and many others, Wizard of Earth Sea, Dispossessed, Left Hand of Darkness. Sometimes I wonder if it is just age or me or if most of the stuff called science fiction these days has just gotten dumber.
But the technology has dealt us a new old hand. The very first science fiction book I ever read appeared in Project Gutenberg in 2006. Librivox turned it into an audio book. If I was a kid today I could walk the six blocks to school while listening to science fiction. I think that would be really cool.

A lot of Fantasy and Sci-Fi stories have been made into movies. I would like to know what did Ms. LeGuin think of the movie that was based on her epic work Earthsea. And yes ... Congratulations on her amazing career so far, looking forward to her next piece of writing. - J.P.

Ms. Le Guin, when Changing Planes came out, you came to a little bookstore in San Diego called Mysterious Galaxy for a talk and signing. I remember it was drizzling a little, and when you arrived the bookstore owner apologized for not having been outside to escort you with an umbrella; you just looked at her and said, "I'm from Oregon." I live in Portland now and enjoy telling people I moved her for the weather.
P.S. I loved the book!
-
I first heard of you when my older brother was reading a paperback called The Lathe of Heaven. I was intrigued by your name ... it sounded as fascinating as whatever was inside that book. 30 years later I can still remember that image.
I've recently come back to writing after a long absence. I'll be attending the writing festival in McMinnville Saturday and look forward to seeing you there.
-
At 56 I still read a lot of fantasy, including animals that talk. BUT I expect more now than I did as a teen-ager. If a dog is going to, it should think and talk like a dog, not another person, but in a dog suit. I also expect more depth and complexity from the real people than I did as a kid.

I really love books and read about three a month. The last ones - Harry Truman biography from David McCulluogh (almost 1000 pages), Bob Noyce - the Man behind the microchip, Where Wizards stay up late (history of Internet), Paypal Wars and currently I am reading the story about Amazon.com, which is really interesting in the sense that it was Amazon which so revolutionized the book industry. What I like about Amazon is how helpful it is for publishers which only have a few titles. Best regards, Traduzioni

At first she was crazy, but after a month at home Withy could speak and behave responsibly. She said she did not remember what had happened, but once she said, "When Jade found me." They asked what she meant and she did not answer. But Jade heard of this, and he went to the heyimas and talked to people there, telling them a true account. Then he left Chukulmas and went up on the Mountain to the Springs, and then went to live in the Lower Valley. He lived outside of Tachas Touchas as a forest-living person. He did not dance, and did not enter his heyimas. At the time of the Moon dancing he always went up into the southwest ranges. One time he did not come back. Withy lived in Chukulmas until she was old. She wore a mask outside the house to hide her face from children.

I'll have to agree with this. Digitizing everything is a very bad idea. Now I don't have anything against advancement, but not useless ones like this.
Google will be better of working to cure diseases and such, not digitize books. Books should be books and that's the end of it. If you want to read something on the go, grab a book instead of a big laptop or sensitive IPad.

You see, I did not read; for lack of interest. The Story Books the Schools pushed were simply intellectually vacant wastes of black on white fields, thus I did not venture far beyond the covers.
