President Barack Obama announced on ABC News on Wednesday that he supports same-sex marriage. The announcement came a day after the voters of North Carolina passed a same-sex marriage ban in their state.
The Wall Street Journal has suggested that Obama voiced his support for same-sex marriage now because of endorsements by other top advisers. Both Vice President Joe Biden and Education Secretary Arne Duncan spoke out in favor of same-sex marriage on Sunday and Monday, respectively.
In December of 2010, at a White House Press Conference, Mr. Obama said, "My feelings about this are constantly evolving." On Wednesday, he said that same-sex marriage has been a dinner table conversation, sharing that First Lady Michelle Obama shares his position. The blog-o-sphere has raised questions about whether Mrs. Obama actually urged the president to publicly endorse same-sex marriage.
Taking this position during an election year is risky, according to some sources. Following the announcement, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney confirmed his stance that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
