This year's Oregon Leadership Summit has been more optimistic than last year, which is good considering that the governor's remarks at last year's summit characterized the state as "on a death spiral." Unemployment has dropped to 9.1 percent, which is the lowest it's been in three years. Business leaders and elected offcials still have a ways to go on their quest to create 25,000 jobs per year and raise the per capita income above the national average by the end of the decade. (2010 census data shows Oregon's per capita income as 10 percent below the national average.)
According to Governor Kitzhaber's address at the 2011 Oregon Leadership Summit Monday, the state is on track to meet those goals. But legislators' recommendation for a statewide hiring freeze the same day serves as a reminder that we're not out of the woods yet.
Are you a part of Oregon's business community? Are you looking for a job? What's your assessment of the state's business climate?
