Sled dogs at the 2011 Eagle Cap Extreme

The Eagle Cap Extreme (ECX) Sled Dog Race takes place this week in the Wallowas. The event is actually three different races: mushers choose to participate in the 200 mile 12 dog race, the 100 mile 8 dog race, or the 31 mile "sprint." The ECX is the only qualifier in Oregon for the 1000+ mile Iditarod and Yukon Quest sled dog races.

The race begins in Joseph, OR, then winds its way through the Hells Canyon Recreation Area and the Wallowa Whitman National Forest.

OPB's Oregon Field Guide documented the 2009 ECX:

You can follow the different teams' progress at the race website.
