The City of Ontario is virtually as far east in Oregon as you can get — right next to the Idaho border and on Mountain Time. In fact, the city's website describes Ontario as, "Where Oregon begins."
We're here in the Treasure Valley for the next installment in the Our Town, series. Ontario's population is only 11,000. However, many times that number come to shop and work. We'll talk more about the huge part that agriculture plays in the economy. One striking figure, an estimated 40% of the nation's onions come from this region. We'll also hear about Ontario's diverse population and its community spirit. And we'll also explore the challenges the town faces as it struggles to attract more buisness and take care of the high number of people who live below the poverty line.
We've put together a companion website for the Our Town series. Head over there to check out our interactive map which includes interviews and photographs of the people and places of Ontario.
Here's a collection of photos from Reid Saito's farm and the live show from Mackey's:
We want to hear from you: Do you live in Ontario, or one of the surrounding communities? What are some of the challenges that you face living in this part of Oregon? What do you love about it?
