Update 8:00am April 3: Superintendent Smith is recommending the closure of two schools and the elimination of 110 teaching positions in the district, among other cuts. Her budget proposal also calls for spending $7 million in reserve funds and eliminating the Outdoor School program. OPB education reporter Rob Manning has more information here.
Portland Superintendent Carole Smith will announce her recommended budget cuts at the school board meeting Monday evening. Twenty-three administrative employees have already been laid off from Portland Public Schools. That made a dent in the district's $27 million budget gap, but there's still a lot of belt-tightening to come. The public will get a chance to weigh in before the board approves the budget on May 14.
Are you a parent of a kid in Portland Public Schools? What are you hoping to hear from Carole Smith?
