Primary Conversations: Washington's 3rd
Brian Baird's retirement from Washington's 3rd Congressional District — which spans the southwest corner of the state from the Columbia up to Olympia — is getting quite a buzz, and quite a bit of national attention, as Democrats try to hold on to the seat, and Republicans fight to get it. Coming up to the top-two primary on August 17th we'll talk to the candidates about the region. What do you want to ask them?
Is your key issue what they propose for the Columbia River Crossing? Or perhaps how they plan to revitalize the regional economy? Or maybe what they think about healthcare, Iraq, or taxes? Whatever it may be, post your questions — and perhaps your experience with the region — here.
GUESTS:
- David Castillo (R)
- Denny Heck (D)
- David W. Hedrick (R)
- Jaime Herrera (R)

Seems like a simple answer. How about creating a business friendly place with low taxes and governmental interference so we attract some more employers and they hire more employees. Besides that if our current politicians push through the new I-5 bridge with $7.50 tolls in both directions on I-205 too "so no one runs around the tolls" as Steve Stuart (county commissioner) has said he wants, we will need some new jobs over here for those workers.
-
I'd like to know what the candidates think about deficit spending. Do they think its a problem that needs to be addressed in the upcoming Congressional session? What do they propose doing about it?
-
Everyone talks about Ronald Reagan's tax cuts and how it led to increased prosperity, however there was also record federal spending in his presidency as well. As members of the House of Representatives , the house which all funds must first be appropriated, I want to know which candidate promises to cut spending the most across-the-board in every single area.
-
Since Hedrick advertises himself as the "leading Republican" in the race and the poll he touts claims that he and Herrera are basically in a statistical tie, why does he and Herrera both target only David Castillo as their focus when this questionable poll lists him as near last?
If they are both truly so far ahead, shouldn't they be focusing on each other for the nomination?
-
First, let me say that, making a statement "Leading Republican" would be like stating "Only true Conservative" You could be the Leading Republican" based on funds, endorsements, what people are saying, polls and a whole list of other things. David Castillo says he is the "Only True Conservative" in this district. However is that his opinion or is there some fact that backs this up! He is allowed to believe this, but it does not make it true.
The problem with your last statement is Hedrick and Herrera are running a campaign on the issues and not attacking each other or even Castillo. No Candidate should be focusing on another Candidate in a clean campaign. That's just dirty politics and we have that in congress today.
Hedrick and Herrera are answering questions from all sorts of people, however they are not answering the people that present themselves as tabloid reporters just looking for a comment to spin.
Let's keep the debate about the issues and not the tabloid news some "confidential" and source is spreading.
-
Lew, could you elaborate on what you mean by, "both target only David Castillo as their focus"?
If you are trying to imply attacks of a personal nature, I have only heard them speak about the issues and where the different candidates stand on said issues.
As far as differentiating between Hedrick and Herrera, please check this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3A9gjQ162k

Would you cut Social Security benefits in an effort to keep the trust fund solvent?
-
With more and more jobs being sent overseas, I fear that this recession is a taste of the new normal. And it's not only manufacturing jobs we're losing; the company I work for will outsource (mostly to India) several hundred IT and clerical positions in September. Do you support outsourcing if it means increased corporate profits? Do you support outsourcing federal government jobs if it is proven to reduce costs?
-
What do you estimate is the share of total payroll dollars paid by the federal government?
What SHOULD it be?
-
There is a big problem with Illegals in this country. A lot of people believe these illegals are taking jobs Americans would and could do. If they were deported this would get at least some Americans back to work. If the employers still can't get people to work maybe they should do like most and increase they pay to a wage Americans can live on and not what the illegals will work for.
Would you vote or sponsor a bill to deport all illegals and then let them apply for citizenship?
-
Donna, check factcheck.org sometime. See how many "illegals" are abusing any 'entitlement programs'. They are making minimum wage doing hard labor that Americans will NOT do. If anyone should be punished, it's the greedy businesses who hire them because they know they can treat them like slaves.
-
I've been hearing a lot about this issue recently and I was hoping to hear the candidates' opinions about the cap and trade system as a way to control greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Part of our Constitution states, “Promote the General Welfare” what will that mean to you as a member of Congress and do you believe the Federal Government should be providing aid to those that receive assistance such as food stamps, daycare assistance, housing assistance, and like related Federal Government programs?
-
2 part question
We all know most candidates support some sort of term limits. What is the maximum terms you will hold office in a Federal position of 2 years?
1= 2 years, 2= 4 years, 3= 6 years, 4=8 years, 5= 10 years, 6= 12 years, 7= 14 years.
Are you willing to give up all Government benifits you recieve while in office when you leave office such as pension, insurance, royalties, and refuse jobs related to any special interest or lobbyist groups?
-
Education is a big issue; Schools are in need of more money and resources. How will you vote or will you sponsor a law that will provide more Federal funds to education? Should Taxpayers fund private schools with vouchers?
-
What is your position on the Bailouts? Would you have voted for them and would you ever vote to use Federal Tax dollars to bailout a business or organization that may fail and hurt the U.S. economy if not funded.
-
While I like E-Verify currently most illegals do work as private people or they work for a business that hires them as a subcontractor so they are not actually working for places like Wal-Mart and such.
How would you stop the loopholes, as no one has been able to do it in the last 30 some years?
Are you opposed to a flat out deport them all?
-
Illegal is illegal. Two wrongs don't make a right. Deport. Most of us came to this country through legal immigration. That's the way it should be. If there are illegals in this country who are working or want to work, then yes, give them an immigration application on the way out.
-
Where do you stand on religion in public schools and on Government Property? Do you agree it should be banned? What about American students saying the Pledge of Allegiance in schools? In God We trust on our US money?
-
What about the Federal Reserve? Do you trust in them?
A huge amount of money and no transparency or accountability?
Audit the Fed and then get rid of it.
-
Are you ProLife or ProChoice and how will you vote on laws relating to this in Congress?
What will you do if a majority of the people in your district oppose your views on this? Will you stand firmly on your beliefs or will you vote for what the people want?
-
There is only one candidate that I see who saw this issue was important enough to put it in their Voter Guide statement. BTW: Hedrick is the only one. I think that speaks for itself.

I am firmly Pro-Life. I would like you to know that David Hedrick is completely Pro-Life even in cases of rape and incest. I totally agree. My thought is, "Don't punish the baby, punish the rapist!" I was at an event in mid July at which all three (R) candidates brought flyers, and I compared Hedrick's flyer with the other two. The thing that struck me immediately was Hedrick's flyer had a list of 14 issues and where he stands on them. The issues that the other two candidates had on their flyers were fewer and I had to read through them to see what they stood for. Hedrick's seemed much more transparent. And his flyer states, "Pro-Life - Unapologetically Pro - Life". Please tell your friends.

The New I-5 Columbia Bridge will probably last 150 -200 years. To be frank, the current bridge proposal aesthetically resembles an aircraft carrier deck or an elaborate elevated freeway. Think Marquam Bridge or I-205.
Do you think design proposals should try be a GRAND PUBLIC WORK and a LANDMARK ICON which will define the Northwest for the 21st Century?
I think a towering sculptural cable suspension bridge like Tacoma Narrows or the Golden Gate is something the timeless site on the Columbia River with the scenic vista of Mt. Hood deserves.
-
What is the cost differential between a purely functional bridge, and an asethetic design? (Have aesthetic designs even been sought?)
And remember that you're amortizing that differential over the lifespan of the bridge.
-
we should build a tunnel.
-
I'd like to know which piece of legislation the candidates have worked on they are most proud of?
-
As a person who lives in North Portland I am sick and tired of sitting in 45mins of trafic every day to go 5 miles looking at washington plates
As the couvers are the main cause of trafic and road wear in the PDX metro area you, the COUVERS should have to pay for the bridge!!!
TOLL THE COUVERS!!!!
-
I agree, Gary. I'm in Overlook and every day Interstate Ave is full of them trying to skirt the traffic. They making getting to New Seasons a pain in the a**.....
-
Don't forget that some of those cars with WA plates carry shoppers across the river (and border) who spend money at merchants who are located in the Great State of Oregon.
-
Don’t you mean that they live in Washington to evade Oregon property taxes letting Oregonians pay for infrastructure for their use and then shop in Oregon to evade Washington sales tax letting other Washingtonians pay for their impacts?
-
Don’t you mean that they live in Washington to evade Oregon property taxes letting Oregonians pay for infrastructure for their use and then shop in Oregon to evade Washington sales tax letting other Washingtonians pay for their impacts? -- MyUsername — Thu Aug. 12th 9:58a.m.
Have you forgotten that those cars with WA plates pay a proportional vehicle registration fee based on the value of their vehicle, not the flat fee we pay here in Oregon? (Maybe you didn't know that...?) Also, if they own real property in WA, they pay property taxes on that, as well as whatever other taxes are levied by various special taxing districts (school, library, fire district). There are some taxes that they still can't avoid by shopping across the river...including cars, RVs, and other conspicuous items. Since WA has no personal income tax, their other taxes (property, sales, vehicle registrations) are stiffer.
Yes, they may be avoiding OR Income taxes by living in WA, and WA sales tax by doing their shopping in OR, but they are still spending their money here.
-
Need to set the record straight here, even though it's off-topic of our 3rd District candidates...
Washingtonians working in Oregon pay Oregon state income tax on every dollar earned in Oregon at the same rate Oregonians pay. If you list the counties by the total revenue paid in the form of Oregon income tax, Clark County, WA is in the top 5. And what do non-resident taxpayers receive? Not much. We use the roads, and I guess if we were laid off, we would collect unemployment insurance from Oregon.
I live about 15 miles from my job. That's about the same as my co-workers living in Tualatin, Hillsboro, and Gresham. So what's the big deal?
-
One of the candidates mentioned that "of every dollar sent to the federal government for transportation, we get 80 cents back".
I would like to know the projected costs of the bridge specifically due to funding purposes given the alternate funding methods:
* the 20% of money sent to the federal government. Also, the additional cost involved in building the bridge due to federal mandates.
* cost of establishing, and paying interest down on any bonds issued
* cost of maintaining toll booths on the bridge(s) over and above any bond interest, for the period the toll is maintained.
-
Typical suburban rhetoric coming out of this conversation. They want all the benefits of spending without paying for it. Low taxes, no tolls, etc. You don't get what you want by NOT paying for it. They sit in their cars polluting air in Oregon to save a few $$ on property taxes and nag about the bridge. Then they nag about having to pay for a new bridge. Then they nag about MAX. When are these people in the 'burbs going to wake up and smell the coffee? Toll the damned highways and build a new bridge so as soon as its done it'll be full and backed up again. Typical suburban tea party rhetoric on this from your guests; let Vancouver have their strip malls, Walmarts and crappy public transit (yes, I've used it). When they want to pay for a service and/or benefit, then they can have it. Anyway, none of them can drive, either.
-
I can't believe these bozos can dance around the realities of building the bridge. The keep blathering about differences in tax theory.
STOP!
We get it. Democrats take action through spending. Republicans believe in limiting on spending and depending on the private sector. WE GET IT.
Now answer the question.
-
What is your position on Net Neutrality legislation?
-
Government is the Problem, Let's stop paying taxes to the Fedreal Government and give them what the need only to cover what is required in the Constitution.
-
Yes!
-
I am sitting here in Nirvana (well, at least as close as we can get these days), enjoying my Stumptown coffee, after having ridden my bike to work, after having a joyful breakfast with my loving (albeit kinda hippy) family. I turn on OPB like usual. I usually like what I hear - it's calming and reassuring that others are working to build a better society for all. Today, it's a different story. The hillbillies have come down from the hills to tell us what they think is best for our region. Yet, they are completely clueless about what makes this region so special and livable. One Jed Clampett starts talking about light rail and ped/bike facilities as boondoggles. Where has this guy been the last twenty years? Oh yeah, up in the hills still dreaming about an auto-dominated culture that sucks the life out of every living thing. I say, back to the hills despot, and leave us alone. We are happy, and getting happier every day. Get your lunacy out of my life and my OPB.
-
I am an amatuer photographer and I enjoy hiking in the great Pacific Northwest. I also enjoy riding my bicyle, at least during the warmer months. It saves money on gas, is great exercise, and reduces pollution. I too want to make sure that future generations will be able to enjoy these things.
I want to speak to your statement, "working to build a better society for all." I believe that getting back to the Constitution will accomplish this. I also don't believe in global climate change. I have a degree in computer science, and have never considered myself a "hillbilly". Except that I like to hike in the hills, as mentioned previously.
It's great that people care about the environment. And that is where the responsibility lies. The federal government should not be involved, or at least not nearly as much. We locals can take care of these things much better.
Sorry if I strayed a bit from the original post topic.
-
We need to get over this bickering about what administration is ruining our economy and how and talk about how we are going to reinvent our economy. We have been on a downhill slide for 35 years, outsourcing our jobs and borrowing to support lifestyle and now it has come home to roost. As important as small business is selling a burger to your neighbor isn’t going to fix the trade imbalance. We need to fix the trade imbalance and quit falling for the partisan politics that distracts us from real issues.
-
I think your right on target
-
I like how you think. We used to have a system for citizens to serve their fellows by holding office. Now we have a lot of politics. It shouldn't be about what party you run with. It should be about whether or not you will vote for what the United States citizens want.
In the interest of full disclosure, I typically vote Republican.
-
Part of my problem with the ideal of lower taxes and the Federal deficit is the fact that you need to do something to pay for the out of control spending left over from the Bush era and the new Obama spending.
I would like to know if any of the candidates would consider cutting the military portion of the budget. I don’t think anyone can seriously discuss cutting federal spending without looking at the DOD.
-
Sheesh, you have three Conservative Republican ideologues spouting the same disproved policies and beliefs that drove our nations economy into the ditch and drowning in an over trillion dollar debt.
Unbelievable, literally unbelievable!
Oh and by the way there is no scientific "debate" about human caused Global Warming, that is just another Conservative Republican Lie. Global Warming is human caused, that is a fact!
-
Sorry I missed that one - I had to turn off the program. I was too disgusted. Did one of these yahoos actually say that there is debate about human-caused climate change? This is too close to home for my comfort. I had no idea such radicals were in such close proximty to our fair city.
-
"Sheesh, you have three Conservative Republican ideologues spouting the same disproved policies and beliefs that drove our nations economy into the ditch and drowning in an over trillion dollar debt." -- Tom D Ford
Solutions are more helpful than dissaproval.
Do you agree with Hedrick regarding Cap and Trade? He said that if you believe global warming, then the last thing we want is to drive business overseas where they don't have the emmisions standards that we do here.
-
One of your guests said that the bridge across the Columbia should be built with local (OR & WA) money, so that it is not subject to "Federal meddling" (structural and safety requirements, certain design elements, whatever they may be). Your guest apparently failed to remember that it WILL be subject to Federal requirements if it is part of the Federal Interstate Highway System.
-
Forget the talking points, where do they stand on Prolife or Prochoice and deport all illegals or amnesty job programs
-
Climate Change science is "HOKEY????" Obviously these candidates are blatently ignorant of the fact that some of the LEADING climate change science is coming from Washington and Oregon institutions. Way to turn off a considerable number of OR and WA citizens.
-
I like the green movement. I think it is our responsibility to use our resources wisely and to live in such a way that future generations will still be able to enjoy the unique features of WA and OR. That said, I don't believe in global warming, or climate change, or whtever it's being caled next. I don't think that we need a massive fear that our world is dying to motivate us to make smart choices regarding the evironment. (I know the world Is slowly dying due to entropy.) Teach each generation to care about the next, and because of that, to make smart decisions regarding the environment. When we went on trips my youth pastor would always say, "Leave the place better than when you found it".
-
About the bridge.
Let's remind ourselves that the great "moderate" Republican President "Ike" Eisenhower got the Federal Big Government involved in building the Interstate highway system (all of the I-5s)and it has benefited big and small businesses as well as the military and State and federal governments, it has benefitted all of The American People!
-
So many ridiculous statements from the republican candidates.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change
"There is NO remaining maintained dissenting opinion" and even among those with dissenting viewpoints, none question that the climate IS warming or that the presence of increasing Greenhouse Gases are the primary cause.
It simply makes the Vancouver Republican candidates look ignorant.
-
Which of these Republicans have been endorsed by the Tea Party?
-
Privatizing Social Security just gives our pension money to the Wall Street Robbers, And that is the reason that Social Security was started in the first place, to keep the robbers hands off of our money!
-
No, tell me it's not true! One of these guests actually endorses privatizing social security? I'll pitch in some dough to send these wing nuts back across the river.
-
I don't profess to know why Social Security was started. I do know that we the people have to keep a close eye on government programs to see if they are actually accomplishing what they are supposed to do. I've heard both parties say that where Social Security is heading is bad. It doesn't matter how long it will take. Once we know that something is not working we have got to start taking steps to transition to a new plan. If we do nothing, we become complicit in the problem. Let's work together toward a new solution.
-
The congestion on the I-5 corridor in the Portland-Vancouver area is the result of poor personal choices by the residents of that area and should not be solved by building a huge taxpayer subsidized bridge. People moved to Washington and commute to Oregon because Portland has jobs and Washington had cheap land. Why should the rest of us subsidies the poor choices of these people? Your guests talk about cutting the federal government out of one side of their mouths and then say the Feds should pay for a new bridge, typical right wing thinking.
-
Is there a consitutional revival going on in america?
-
Halleluia, Yes! :)
-
What will you cut spending on? and How do those cuts help us in the 3rd District?
-
Would there by any reason to have a Federal Department of Education? Can we help our national debt by ending a repetitive arm of the government that is at the 36% of our State level budget.
-
Tea Parties do not endorse candidates.
However the Big lobbying groups like Freedomworks that uses the Tea Party people to push their agenda do, but only for their lobbying support.
-
Quit repeating the same right wing Obama got us in all the debt dogma! He didn’t get us in two wars lasting longer than any war in our history. Red Herring, Red Herring Red Herring! Quit with the talking points and get to the solutions.
-
the constitution of the united states of america, yes lets get to the solution!
-
The founding fathers laid out for us that A free society cannot survive as a republic without a broad program of general education.
What will you to stop the cuts to education in the 3rd district and make sure that every citizen in the 3rd have that broad program of general education that is fully funded, so the our citizens can take care of themselves?
-
Washington, we are so screwed if we elect any of these Rs. However, I gotta say, the smug nonsense coming from Portland w/ regard to "us hillbillies" doesn't help a thing. Come on, Portland. You claim you're so smart and liberal -- don't be so damn judgy. As for Tea Party, constitution stuff. Hedrick is the one the teabaggers are claiming. And for anyone who's taken even a basic American history class, it's clear he hasn't got a clue what he's talking about when he references the Constitution. Vote for the candidate that believes in science and understands the context of history. Vote for Heck because we're doomed if we don't.
-
I am normally much more collaborative and constructive in my "conversations", but these people are so off-base (climate change denial, auto-dominated culture, hyper-individualism) that a serious dialogue with them is not possible. The fact that they are seriously running for public office (and a powerful office at that) is stomach churning.
-
I hear, you, dc, but the fact that they WANT to represent the area doesn't mean that they do. Now, yes-- I'll be one of the first to make fun my hayseed neighbors. But there are a lot of us on the north side of that river who are trying. Oregon's got plenty of its own wackos, too -- they're everywhere. I want to gove a lot of credit to ToL for trying to pin these people down. They're still slippery, but Dave did a much better job than anything I've seen yet continuing to press them until they either couldn't answer the question or, when answering it, helped shine the light on their own inadequacies.
-
Thank you for reminding me that north of the river is not all bad, and south of the river is not all good. I'm glad you're there to represent progressive interests in SW Washinton. Although, why in the world would you want to live there?
-
I firmly believe that our founders knew what they were doing when they put together the United States Constitution. Almost across the board, I have heard people say that our country is in a big mess. I believe that our country's decline can be linked to how far we have strayed from the constitution. I am not alone in this belief.
If we want to know more about what they meant when they said this or that, we should get a copy of The Federalist Papers. (I'm about 95% sure that's the name of the book)
As for David Hedrick knowing the constitution, everything I've heard him say shows that he knows it better than most.
-
Geez, you know that Prairie Home Companion saying that all of their children are above average?
We found all of the people who are below average, it is the Conservative Republicans in our US!
How profoundly sad!
-
Who can help clear up the business on Hedrick's felon father? This is news to me and I'm dying to know.
-
wow that was quick, seconds after hearing there may be charges, you have his father as a convicted felon...uh, do you have anything to back that up with? Court Documents, a online news story.? Let me know. thanks!
-
What a horrible post you just made. Hedrick just cleared it up. His dad is involved in a civil dispute over a business contract. He's not a felon. Your post shows you're wanting this to be a tabloid not a discussion. Most businesses are involved in contract disputes at any given time. There is a certain camp out there that now sees Hedrick as a viable threat and is slinging whatever mud they can create or distort. Trust your gut people, investigate and make your own decisions. Don't believe lies!
-
yawn. Hedrick is a fraud, an ignorant bully, and a threat to our future. Based on what I know about him, it simply seemed quite plausible. But you, know, as he says, the science isn't in. So don't go jumping to conclusions, guys, geez.
-
This is why good men don't run for office. only those with ego's out of control and a little crazy who really do think they are better then everyone run for office. A normal guy gets in the race and you dig back to whatever you can about them to make them look bad...the fact is your not acting his princples when you take a swing at this father.
God forbid you guys find out about my Dad! my gosh.
But, I am not my father, I am the furthest thing from him in every way.
-
This was addressed as soon as it was brought up. During the broadcast. It is a contract dispute and in no way is it a "criminal charge" (as stated in the original on-air question). It's pretty bold to call someone a felon without any proof. I don't remember off the top of my head what the definitions of libel and slander are, but please be careful with what you accuse people of.
-
Folks, here's more information about the criminal case I was referring to:
http://www.opb.org/thinkoutloud/blog/clarifying-charges/
-
Marshall in Corvallis:
1. We do not have a cleaner environment then 1950, 1900, 1859, 1805.
2. I believe the Texas program does not pay for disability, death benefits to widows and children, or medical coverage to disabled medical problems. It is not a Pyramid scam. Not all of the money goes into retirement.
3. The fossil fuel issue is about money. as soon as there is an alternative that is better, those truck companies will change immediately.
4. if your child was diagnosed by 1000 experts and you were told your child has a problem, and a handful told you your child was ok, you would go with the 1000 experts. that's where we are with global warming: thousands have stated there is a problem to address.
-
These guests, on today’s program, generally do not see that if the federal does not balance the federal deficit, which the failure of sun setting would simply exacerbate, not only do the regional partners rely upon the local revenues for funding, which are falling, directly, but the businessmen will themselves contribute to further exacerbation of national debt, and the further de-funding of local projects, indirectly. Indirecly, by insisting upon tax breaks that, from their inception, were designed to increase the national debt, and increase the general stability of state infrastructures.
It's important to remember too WHY the GOP passed the tax cuts with that 'sunset' provision.
The reason was that under the reconciliation procedures they used to pass it (y'know, the same procedure they argued it was un-American to use when Democrats used it) they HAD to sunset the provision because the tax cuts added massively to our deficit and their projections proved that it would. Since the reconciliation rules were intended only for bills that would REDUCE the deficit, they HAD to sunset the law to qualify the bill to be passed under them (Democrats have since modified the rules to disallow this sort of trickery, and ensure that bills passed under reconciliation will definitely reduce the deficit, which ought to say something about which party is really concerned with reducing it.)In other words, that Republican majority KNEW the bologna they now regularly spew about how tax cuts increase revenue was complete nonsense.
"eighty cents" is a fair deal to all concerned.
A twenty cent toll to interregional transportation will make for a better region. Presently the relationship between Portland and Vancouver rather more resembles the San Diego / Tijuana divide, than two cities between American States.
-
David Hedrick understands this, he says we have to stop deficit spending, and make major cuts, and put the Fed back into the little box that the founding fathers knew they needed to be in.
I can care less about what side gets the credit for doing it, or who did what in the past.
I want to know who I can send to congress to limit congress! and in my own looking into it, David Hedrick is the only one who has that mind set.
-
Why does OPB let republican candidates tell lies on this program? Within the scientific community these is NO debate on Global Warming. The only people who will not acknowledge this have ties to the oil and gas companies. This is of course where many republicans get there campaign funding from.
-
You just nailed it....lol, "Within the scientific community these is NO debate on Global Warming. "
just like in the scientific community there is no debate on God, the "Community" knows that you do NOT talk about him or you loss your funding from...wait for it...wait for it.... Goverments! Yes, so your 100% right, "Within the scientific community these is NO debate on Global Warming. "
-
Just one more point becuase this is inportant...There are thousands of scientist who stand up for man made Global warming....just like there were thousands of people who stood in line for public housing in Goregia, it was 30,000!
Both groups are in line for the same reason.
-
TK, I actually agree with you. People are waiting in line for public housing in Georgia because of climate change. What so many people do not realize (including these three Rebublican candidates) is that the economy functions within, and at the mercy of, the environment. They are not separate. As the environment crumbles from human-caused impacts, so does the economy. One cannot thrive while the other degrades.
-
I think there are two very seperate scientific communities and whithin each community there is consensus about this issue, but you are right in saying that there is no debate between the two. I, for one, would like to see a radio or tv debate between the communities, like the one we just listened to.
-
Everything for the enivorment, we must save the enivorment..I hike all the time, I am out in nature and I LOVE the northwest, I am climbing Rainer next weekend.
But I am at the top of the food chain and I plan on staying here. I WILL produce what I need and my family needs given the best means that we have balanced with my freedoms. To turn over my property to create a system where the goverment controls my means of producing more property for myself... I will not do.
You have a better way, then spend your property and sell it to me, becuase i will buy it if it produces more property in a better way for me.
But this whole idea of Goverment telling me there is a problem, taking my property becuase they need it to make things better for me. I just don't like it. I won't allow it. Its my property.
-
There you have it - fear. TK is afraid of climate change, and how it will affect the economy and, ultimately, his property. This is not a healthy approach to our common problem, obviously. There are some who believe that our environmental (and hence social, political, and economic) problems are so dire that only an every-man-for himself approach (as presented by TK) is the only way to go. Fortunately, there are other options. We can look to advances being made in several countries around the world to maximize the well-being of their citizens while degrowing their economies and lessening their environmental impacts. The stuff the you own does not determine your well-being. The fact is that the opposite is true. Ultimately, you can't take what you own with you in the end. And, your children, or your children's children will come to view property, or any wealth measured by material gain, as a monstronsity that has no place in human civilization.

I am for sure not afriad, nor do I not want to see or believe in advances we could make to help protect our enviroment. Who wouldn't want that?
What I mean by property is the fruits of my pesonal labor, the income I earn, from my work and ouput belong to me.
If you have come to believe something i,e Globa Warming...fine, talk to me about, show me advances we can make and things we can invest in to make needed changes...but do not come to me and say hey, this is what I believe now hand over your property for the greater good of the earth. No. I am not going to let you do that to me.
Just like the people who have the belief that everyone is entitled to healthcare, so your going to make me pay for program i do not want or pay a fine. No, your not getting my persona property, and Your not in control of the means of my production.
Keep your Religous Global Warming Beliefs to yourself or Risk running into my beliefs about how far one has a right to go to protect his property.

Good God, they don't demonstrate any familiarity with Critical Thinking Skills, Logic, or Rational Thinking, they just repeat Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck-isms without even questioning what they mean. It is astounding!
-
"I am a robot....I hate Rush, I hate Glenn Beck, I was just told these people are like Rush and Glenn Beck so therefore I hate them too"
-
Sorry, TKHowell, you are so wrong, I don't hate Rush and Beck, I pity them and their worshippers for their ignorance. Their ignorance and their easy manipulability hurts our nation.
-
oh, i see.

All candidates in the 3rd CD race say that jobs are their main concern. I want to know exactly how each proposes to increase employment of people living in SW Washington, realizing that many Clark County residents work in Oregon.
