Rebroadcast: Food Access
It's hard for me to make good food choices. I'm drawn to the salty, the sweet, the fat. I know I'm not alone. I can usually force myself to buy the stuff I know I should be eating more of and minimize the gooey and savory. However, I live in a neighborhood that full of grocery store options that are close by. And to top it off, I've got a car. For people without a car or who live farther away from a grocery store, getting good food at a mini-mart can be practically impossible. Earlier this year we broacast a show exploring what difference it makes to live near stores or farmer's markets that provide good, fresh food — and the lengths people in some rural areas have to go to get groceries.
Do you live in a so-called "food desert" in Portland or another urban area? Do you live in rural Oregon? How far do you have to go to shop for food? How does this affect your daily life?
Should local or county governments play a role in changing or improving our access to food?
