OPB reporter April Baer spent Thursday at Portland City Hall, listening to public comment, and awaiting a decision on whether the city would rejoin the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Civil rights concerns had caused Portland police to leave the JTTF six years ago. This week the city council voted unanimously to rejoin on the city's own terms. According to the Associated Press:
Mayor Sam Adams said the agreement requires officers to obey Oregon's strict provisions protecting civil liberties, limits them to only those cases that involve crimes and gives the city's police chief rather than the FBI authority to decide what cases city officers work on.
April Baer will join us for the beginning of today's show to explain what happened at city hall and what this decision means for law enforcement going forward.
