The Ross Brothers
Andrew and Winston Ross are two brothers living very different lives in Eugene. Andrew is homeless. Winston is a journalist who writes and reports for the Register-Guard and Newsweek. In fact, he was on our show earlier this month talking about his coverage of the financial problems in the town of Oakridge. He also covers what he calls "weird crime" for The Daily Beast. A couple of years ago, Winston wrote an article for Newsweek about his brother. Winston spent a day with Andrew, following him through his routine.
Through the day I peppered him with questions, all meant to answer this one: why had he failed to make something of himself, and I hadn't? It was a complicated question, but it was pretty clear by the day's end that the most detrimental influence in his life, from an early age, was videogames and the Internet.
Andrew says he doesn't spend as much time online anymore since his laptop was stolen along with some library books. His overdue book fees came with restricted access to library computers. He also says he's had trouble with anxiety in a traditional workplace setting and would much rather be his own boss.
Do you have siblings? How have their choices been different from yours and how has that affected your relationship?
