The Portland Art Museum is home to the largest Mark Rothko exhibition exhibition that's been shown on the West Coast in over a decade. The showcase draws attention to Rothko's adolescence as Marcus Rothkowitz in Portland in the early twentieth century. It coincides with other Rothko events, as part of a city-wide celebration of the nationally renown artist's youth in Portland. Third Angle Ensemble is performing two pieces by Morton Feldman that were inspired by Rothko's work. And Portland Center Stage is staging Red — a semi-fictionalized account of Rothko's life.
The exhibit features lesser-know art from Rothko's youth to his famous colorfield paintings of his later career.
Are you a Rothko fan? Do you see Portland in his work? What questions do you have for the curator of the Portland Art Museum's Rothko exhibit?
For more on Rothko in Portland, Barry Johnson reviewed PAM's Rothko exhibit and Portland Center Stage's Red for OPB's Arts and Life.
