Smoking in Parks
The City of Vancouver is considering legislation that, if passed, could make it much more difficult for smokers to light up in parks. On Monday, the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Department, along with the City of Vancouver Law Department proposed a ban on smoking in all public parks.
Although the Vancouver city council seemed supportive of the idea, they want to hear what the public thinks before taking a vote. A public hearing is set for December 1st, which will follow the first reading of the legislation on November 28th.
In Hillsboro, a similar smoking ban was passed in city parks in 2009. Steve Greagor, Hillsboro's director of Parks and Recreation, says that there was very little opposition when Hillsboro banned smoking in its parks.
Do you live in a city that banned smoking in parks? Do you regularly smoke in outdoor public areas? If so, how would a park smoking ban affect you?
