The Alzheimer's Association of Oregon is releasing its first statewide plan to address the disease today. The organization's public policy director Jon Bartholomew will talk about the details for the first time on Think Out Loud this morning. The plan includes more training for physicians and greater funding for research and education. Last summer we talked with Bartholomew about the progress toward a comprehensive plan, as part of a short series on Alzheimer's. He says the need for a comprehensive plan for Alzheimer's is staggering. Examples he cites include:

  • Current Oregon population with Alzheimer's is 75 thousand. (Roughly the same population as the city of Bend.)
  • By 2025, that number will jump to an estimated 110 thousand.
  • Alzheimer's patients cost Medicare roughly three times as much as patients of similar age without the disease.

We'll talk with Bartholomew about the plan, what's already happening and what patients and their families can expect in the near and long term.

Are you or someone you love affected by Alzheimer's? What questions do you have about the first ever statewide plan to address Alzheimer's disease?
