There was a fair amount of business-related news in Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen's recent "State of the County" speech. Cogen announced a development deal to create a public market in the style of Seattle's Pike Place Market, one of that city's most popular tourist attractions. He also used the speech to discuss his concerns about urban renewal and his hopes for a proposed education district, which is a joint venture between the city and the county.

In other news, big retail chains seem to be popping up all over downtown Portland as a result of a revitalization plan that's been in the works for quite a while. Attracting more retailers to the city's downtown was a priority for Mayor Sam Adams starting in 2009. Now, a new downtown Apple store could be the latest in a string of retail scores for the city.

Do you live or work downtown? How have new retail stores opening there affected you? Would you like to see Portland build a public market? What business news is on your mind?
