Title IX at 40
It's been 40 years since Title IX was passed. You may have heard about the landmark law in connection with athletic opportunities for women and girls. However, Title IX mandates much more than that. It also requires equal access to math and science education, continuing classes for pregnant and parenting teens, as well as protection from sexual harassment. Fatima Goss Graves with the National Women's Law Center says Oregon and other states have done particularly well in some areas — like educating student parents — but there's still many areas where opportunities for girls fall short compared with those for boys.
Did you feel you had equal opportunities as a girl in public school? What did you excel at? Was there a program you wanted to participate in but couldn't because of your gender? Do you see gender inequality at your child's public school? Were you a student parent?
