Washington Race for Governor
Washington's candidates for governor are locked in a dead heat entering the last week of campaigning. They are running to replace outgoing Governor Christine Gregoire. With seven percent of voters still undecided, it's anybody's guess who will win.
- Jay Inslee served as Congressman for eastern Washington's fourth district for one term in the nineties before losing reelection in 1996. In 1998, he was elected as representative for western Washington's first district until he resigned this year to work full-time on his campaign for governor.
- Rob McKenna was elected as a Metropolitan King County Councilman in 1995, and served in that position until being elected as state attorney general — his current office — in 2004.
If McKenna wins, he would be the first Republican governor to be elected in the state since 1980. It would be an end to the longest GOP gubernatorial drought in the country. In order to win, though, he'll likely have to persuade a significant number of Obama voters. The president had a 15 lead over Mitt Romney in Washington as of early this month.
