What Mental Health Resources Do Parents And Kids Need?
In response to the shootings at Clackamas Town Center and Sandy Hook Elementary, we're looking into some of the potential ways to prevent such tragedies. A couple of weeks ago, we discussed security in schools. On this show, we'll talk with parents of children struggling with mental health issues.
We definitely don't want to equate mental illness with criminal behavior. At the same time, as more details emerge about Newtown shooter Adam Lanza, parents of kids with emotional or behavioral problems are speaking out about a lack of resources. Liza Long, a mother in Idaho, penned a controversial blog post about her 13-year-old son. Some have questioned this mother's decision to write and speak publicly about her son's mental illness.
She said, "I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me."
Here in Oregon, an influx of calls to a mental health crisis hotline prompted Multnomah County to hire more people to staff the phones.
Do you have experience parenting a child with emotional or behavioral problems? Have you struggled with mental health issues as a young person? What have you found most helpful? What resources do you wish you had?
