The unemployment rate for people under the age of 25 is even higher than the overall unemployment rate. And it's going up. The Oregon Employment Department tracks the rate by suveying households. The survey counts anyone between the ages of 16 an 24 who is employed or looking for work.

According to state employment economist Nick Beleiciks, the unemployment rate is highest for teenagers. About 40 percent of Oregonians between the ages of 16 and 19 are in the work force, or trying to be, and of those about 30 percent are unemployed. Beleiciks says summer employment can affect the numbers, but more and more, young people looking for seasonal work are competing with adults who are seeking the same jobs because they can't find work in their chosen fields.
