on Taking Shots
congratulations! you have been the beneficiary of all of us who have been vaccinated and did the same for our kids. We protected the "herd" and you took advantage of our precautions. Your conclusion that your immune system is what kept you healthy is wrong!

I'd like to hear a show with current information about alternative energy in Oregon including discussion with people who are utilizing solar, wind, etc and their experiences. Experts from Energy Trust of Oregon to talk about rebates and tax credits, contractors who do installations, engineers working on new solutions, local reps from industries building components for systems could all provide lots of information. That could be an exciting discussion. Thanks!

on Faith in the Northwest
Many people around the world have become alienated from religion and God by what is and has been done in the name of God. In our country, for most people, the religious right exemplifies Christianity and, especially in progressive Oregon, people don't want any part of that. I usually don't mention anything about being a Christian to people when I first meet them as I don't want to be stuck in the "religious fanatic" box.
My hope is that people will look deeply into what is happening in many churches and find a church/synagogue/mosque etc. that enables their spiritual journey. such places do exist! Imagine a religious community that hopes you will keep asking questions such as:
1) is it possible that heaven and hell coexist here on earth?
2) is sin all about sex and drugs or is it really about not living up to our potential as fully self actualized humans?
3) is everything in the Bible literal?
4) can a story be True without being true?
I find my church community to be the most important place to ask these questions and share with others in their journey. My church helps me to see God in every person and to work towards social justice and co-create heaven with God right here today.
Religions are human institutions and as such are fallible. Just because terrible things have happened in the past doesn't mean that we have to throw in the towel. Keep the faith!

on Stranded in Oregon
i'm a little surprised that in joining the conversation this late there is no mention of mental illness and its effect on homelessness. As a volunteer at a local non profit that helps people get off the street, i've seen that the state of care for folks who are mentally ill is in shambles. During the eighties under Reagan when mental hospitals were closed and patients turned out to fend for themselves a new system should have been created to care and assist in the best manner. this never happened and we are living with that wreckage. Many mentally ill folks will never be able to consistently hold down a job. Some will, and they need to be supported in order to continue to do so. Just last month, Cascadia Behavioral Services was on the brink of collapse. A temporary fix was made, but I don't believe there is anything permanent in place.
For those who believe that homeless people are all lazy drug addicts, as a first step to understanding i suggest picking up a copy of "Street Roots" and reading it for the next few month. its an inexpensive way to get a better understanding of homelessness in our community.

on Obama and Race in Oregon
Obama doesn't disagree with Rev. Wright's core Christian beliefs. He says Wright's failure and the bitterness that results is believing that racism will be with us forever and not understanding our country's capacity to change. Obama is addressing how to change racism. Listen closely and he is saying it is up to each of us. its not coming from the top. when we have leadership that models how we can be our best, people are ready to follow.

on Baseball Returns
oregonians have much more interesting and creative things to do and we can easily have a conversation with a stranger without having to discuss baseball. We have our own sports; skiing, kayaking, biking, fishing, climbing, hiking just to name a few.
